LOS ANGELES—An FBI agent denies he hired prostitutes to have sex with three men charged in a Southern California weapons trafficking scheme.

The Los Angeles Times ( http://lat.ms/WQbQJw) says Charles Ro denied defense allegations of misconduct Wednesday during the Los Angeles trial of three Filipino nationals.

The men have pleaded not guilty to smuggling assault rifles, grenade launchers and mortar launchers from the Philippines to Long Beach in 2011.

Ro posed as a weapons broker for a Mexican drug cartel to gather evidence that led to their arrest. Ro testified that while undercover in the Philippines he took the defendants to karaoke bars but denied seeing or knowing that the men had sex with club hostesses working as prostitutes.

The government reimbursed Ro $14,500 spent on entertainment, drinks and tips.
