The Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office says former fire district Capt. Jon Wilmot was arrested in December on suspicion of grand theft and burglary, and released on $30,000 bail.
The 51-year-old Wilmot retired just before his arrest, according to the Contra Costa Times ( http://bit.ly/UouYjr).
A search warrant executed on Wilmot's cars and properties returned 268 items including supplies, tools and fire gear.
The fire district has also filed a restraining order against Wilmot, accusing him of keeping a "large cache of illegal weapons" and threatening employees.
Sheriff's deputies seized 53 guns and ammunition from Wilmot, which has sparked a federal investigation, according to NBC Bay Area.
