HALF MOON BAY -- Four candidates have emerged to challenge three members of the Coastside Fire Protection District board of directors in an April recall election tied to the agency's Cal Fire contract.
The candidates -- Karen Anderson, J.B. Cockrell, Lee McKusick and Harvey Rarback -- aim to unseat board members Mike Alifano, Douglas Mackintosh and Gary Riddell over the directors' controversial push to sever the district's relationship with the state fire agency.
Anderson, a private investigator, will appear on the April 9 ballot against Alifano. Cockrell, a pilot, will be listed opposite Mackintosh.
McKusick and Rarback are both running against Riddell. McKusick works as a teacher's aide, while Rarback is a retired scientist.
The incumbents claims Cal Fire has not lived up to the terms of its contract. The challengers argue Cal Fire is performing well and that returning to a stand-alone fire department will prove more costly.
