LOS ANGELES—Prosecutors in a man's murder trial say he's guilty because he gave a fellow gang member the gun used to kill a Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy in 2008.

City News Service reports that Jose Renteria's defense attorney responded Tuesday by telling the jury that they'll have to decide whether Renteria encouraged using the gun to kill somebody and knew the murder would actually occur.

Renteria is charged with murder for allegedly providing the murder weapon hours before Juan Abel Escalante was gunned down.

Deputy District Attorney John Colello says Renteria is a hardcore, entrenched gang member who provided Carlos Velasquez a weapon that he knew was functional and wouldn't jam.

Velasquez pleaded guilty last year to first degree murder and is serving a life sentence.
