Two criminal defendants with suspended licenses were cited for driving from the courthouse, San Rafael police said Tuesday.

Adam Michael Haley, 32, Point Reyes Station and Ryan Eric Erdman, 32, San Rafael were stopped Monday during a "court sting" operation by the San Rafael Police Department. The operation targeted drivers whose licenses were suspended or revoked because of court cases such as drunken driving.

Undercover officers "staked out" the courthouse Monday morning to see if offenders who are not supposed to be driving made other arrangements get to court. Haley and Erdman were stopped and cited as they drove away from the courthouse, and police impounded their cars, said San Rafael police Lt. Alan Piombo.

The sting was funded through a grant program of the California Office of Traffic Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Haley and Erdman could not be reached for comment Tuesday.

Police did not specify the original violations that had caused their licenses to be suspended.
