LOS ANGELES—More than 170 Los Angeles firefighters are battling what is called a "major emergency" blaze in a second-floor unit of a three-story San Fernando Valley condominium complex.

It appears residents in the 25-unit Valley Village complex escaped unharmed.

City fire spokesman Brian Humphrey says the fire was reported at 10:03 a.m. and was still burning at 11:20 a.m. with flames crawling through walls and heavy smoke. He calls it a "major emergency" fire.
