California Department of Transportation representatives told Mariposa officials Tuesday they're considering separate options that would eliminate the need for a detour that's been slowing traffic for several years.
The Merced Sun-Star ( http://bit.ly/VVQYzL) reports that officials had the detour built after a rockslide more than six years ago dumped 70,000 tons of rock on the roadway about 12 miles outside the park.
The proposals to eliminate the detour include building a so-called "rock shed" or building a tunnel through the mountain along the side of roadway.
Caltrans officials say they expect one of the alternatives would be selected by fall, with construction starting by the summer of 2015.
