FREMONT -- A man that crashed his van into a pole Friday on southbound Interstate 880 near the Dixon Landing Road off-ramp died of a medical condition experienced before the accident, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Emergency crews responded about 8:15 a.m., after a White Chevrolet Astro van crashed into a light pole on the shoulder of the freeway, CHP Officer James Evans said.
The driver was found unresponsive at the scene at 9:02 a.m. and transported to Washington Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead as a result of a medical condition unrelated to the collision, CHP Officer Ralph Caggiano said. Details about the condition were not available late Friday, and the Alameda County Coroner's Office has yet to determine the cause of death or release the man's name.
No other vehicles were involved in the crash. According to Evans, the light pole fell down after the impact, detaching at the base and exposing live wires. All lanes were reopened by 9:17 a.m.
