APTOS - Three juveniles fled the scene Tuesday after the Jeep sport utility vehicle they were riding in collided with another vehicle and flipped over on the right shoulder of northbound Highway 1, the California Highway Patrol reported.

Officer Nick Petrinovich said the Jeep was traveling north of Freedom Boulevard when the driver made an unsafe turning movement and struck a Volkswagen sedan traveling in the same direction at 6:30 p.m. The Volkswagen came to rest on the right shoulder, and the sole occupant was uninjured.

Three occupants in the Jeep, all younger than 18, ran from the scene but were contacted by the CHP nearby on Soquel Drive, Petrinovich said. The three, one of whom complained of pain, were not arrested pending further investigation.

Petrinovich said alcohol or drug use is not believed to be a factor. Traffic slowed for a short period while the CHP closed a lane as part of the investigation.
