PITTSBURG -- A 34-year-old driver has died after suffering serious injuries in a crash that may have involved alcohol, police said.
A deputy at the Contra Costa Coroner's Office identified the man Wednesday morning as Mario Thomas, of Oakley.
A 32-year-old Antioch woman who was a passenger in the car was treated and released at a hospital, according to Pittsburg police Lt. Ron Raman. No other cars were involved, and no one else was injured.
The black BMW was totaled around noon Tuesday, when it crashed into the center median and wrapped itself around a tree on East Leland Road, in front of Los Medanos College. Thomas was taken to a hospital, where he died Tuesday night, Raman said.
Police would not immediately say why they believed why alcohol might be involved in the crash. Speed and rain may have also been factors, Raman said Tuesday.
The investigation will continue and an autopsy will be likely be conducted Wednesday, Raman said.
