BERKELEY -- Three teenage girls are wanted by police for assaulting two women and spraying them in the face with a toxic substance, police said.

Police said the two women were walking on Dwight Way near Prospect Street about 9:40 p.m. Friday when one of the teens sprayed a substance, possibly pepper spray, in one woman's face.

Both women tried to run away but the teens grabbed the other woman, punched her in the face, knocked her to the ground and sprayed her in the face. The teens demanded the victims' property but when a man passing by intervened in the struggle, the girls ran away.

The suspects were last seen getting into a white Dodge Charger, which headed west on Dwight Way. The victims were injured but declined medical care, police said.

Both Berkeley Police and UC Berkeley Police searched the area but didn't find the suspects. Detailed descriptions of the suspects were not given to police. Anyone with information should call UC Berkeley police at 510-642-6760.
