BERKELEY -- Police have surrounded a residence in the 1600 block of Addison Street where a man believed to be armed with a handgun is holed up inside.

The man, who police said is a former member of the military, is believed to have fired at least one shot, but no one is reported injured.

Details were sketchy late Wednesday, but police responded about 7:02 p.m. to reports of a loud argument between two people in the 2200 block of San Pablo Avenue.

A short time later, police found a car connected to those involved in the argument at University Avenue and Curtis Street and took one man -- later determined to be the suspected gunman's brother -- into custody.

At some point during the incident, a shot was fired although it was not immediately clear where the shooting occurred or at what time.

Police have cordoned off the neighborhood and are negotiating with the reported gunman.
