SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.—The California jury has decided a man was sane when he killed his mother with two shotgun blasts on his apartment balcony.

San Luis Obispo County prosecutors told the Tribune of San Luis Obispo ( http://bit.ly/VAVhn7) that 36-year-old Christopher John Shumey is facing up to 68 years in prison when he's sentenced on March 28.

The jury deliberated three hours on Thursday before deciding Shumey was legally sane in September 2011 when he killed 65-year-old Karen Shumey, a popular eighth-grade teacher at Vandenberg Middle School.

The same panel earlier found him guilty of second-degree murder.

Shumey had pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, so there was a sanity phase of trial.

If the jury decided he was insane, he would have been sent to a state mental hospital.
