MURRIETA, Calif.—Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against a Southern California man for the Halloween rape and killing of a young single mom.

The burned body of 23-year-old Shanae Wesley was found after firefighters extinguished a fire in her Murrieta apartment. A neighbor rescued her 3-year-old son before firefighters arrived.

The Riverside Press-Enterprise ( http://bit.ly/YJBhxf) says 22-year-old Marquise McGlown is charged with murder while lying in wait, attempted murder, rape, burglary and car theft.

He pleaded not guilty and is being held in jail without bail.

Prosecutor Jess Walsh says the death penalty will be sought.

Investigators say McGlown met Wesley through an acquaintance hours before she was killed. While a group was inside her apartment, McGlown took her keys.

Prosecutors say McGlown later returned to the apartment and attacked the woman.
