SANTA CRUZ, Calif.—Authorities say at least three people— including two police officers—have been shot in Santa Cruz Tuesday afternoon.

The Santa Cruz Sentinel ( http://bit.ly/Wq0I5C) reports that two officers and one suspect were shot in two separate shootings around 3:30 p.m.

The newspaper says the first shooting took place as police were investigating a sexual assault when a suspect fired, hitting the two officers.

The second shooting took place while police were in pursuit of at least one suspect.

Monterey County deputies, officers from nearby Capitola and Watsonville have joined the search for a suspect, or suspects.

Television helicopter shots show a large number of heavily armed officers searching up and down streets of Santa Cruz. It's not known how many suspects police were looking for.

Police officials did not immediately return calls to The Associated Press seeking more information about the incident.
