A man who brought what he thought might be a live World War II-era "pineapple" hand grenade to the Hermosa Beach police station prompted an evacuation of the area Wednesday.

The device, however, could not have detonated.

The man found the grenade while cleaning out his deceased father's "war mementos chest," and took it to the Police Department at 12:30 p.m., Hermosa Beach police Sgt. Robert Higgins said.

The grenade was in the man's car.

Police evacuated people from the parking lot and the City Hall Finance Department offices, which were closest to his car.

"This grenade is so old, we don't know what state it's in," Higgins said.

A Sheriff's Department bomb squad arrived about 2:15 p.m. and determined the grenade was deactivated and posed no threat.
