The massive accident, reported at about 3 a.m., shut down all lanes, northbound and southbound, on the Long Beach Freeway north of the San Diego (405) Freeway, said California Highway Patrol Officer Cheyenne Quesada.
Traffic was being diverted from both sides at Del Amo Boulevard, Quesada said.
Witnesses reported seeing a woman in one lane and another body on the opposite side, as if they had been ejected from vehicles, he said.
The vehicles were spread between Del Amo Boulevard and Willow Street, Quesada said, which made it difficult to determine whether there were two accidents or just one.
CHP dispatchers reported hearing more vehicles crash as the first
reports were called in, he said.
