An announcement Friday by the city of Marina on a planned multiscreen theater wasn't a call to immediately unpack the golden, ground-breaking shovels.
The three-paragraph statement said the city "is still looking forward" to a movie theater in the Dunes on Monterey Bay development.
Last fall, developer Marina Community Partners and Texas theater-chain owner Cinemark submitted plans to the city for a 10-screen theater, and the city has approved the plans, the statement said.
But construction bids came back much higher than expected after Cinemark put the project out to bid.
"At this time, all three parties continue to look for alternatives to reduce the overall costs to construct the theater. All parties remain hopeful that the theater will be constructed," the statement said.
Once new alternatives are tested, the parties would hope the theater can be built in time for an opening in the spring or summer of 2014, the statement said.
The Cinemark theater was first announced in 2008 before the economy cratered, and last fall city officials said they expected the theater would be ready sometime late this year.
