A man who abandoned his vehicle after a high-speed chase and went into the water at Marina State Beach has climbed out of the surf and surrendered.
According to police radio traffic, police, fire and other agencies responded to the beach about 1 p.m. while the man was sighted in the waves beyond the surf line.
Assistance from the Coast Guard was requested.
There was no immediate word on the man's condition after he walked out of the surf with his hands up.
He apparently had headed for the water after trying to out-run a California Highway Patrol pursuit.
An ambulance crew was checking the suspect's medical condition.
