Small fire doused at taqueria

Firefighters put out a fire in a grease pot in the kitchen of Taqueria Vallarta on Friday morning.

The Mexican restaurant at 1221 Mission St. was not yet open when the 7:50 a.m. blaze was reported, said Santa Cruz Fire Battalion Chief Jason Hajduk.

About five employees who were preparing food in the restaurant were evacuated. Firefighters made sure the fire did not spread elsewhere in the kitchen.

No one was injured, Hajduk said. Firefighters cleared smoke from the building.

A taqueria employee said the restaurant was expected to reopen about 11:30 a.m. Friday.
