SAN MATEO, Calif.—Authorities say five people were killed and five others survived a limousine fire on a San Francisco Bay area bridge.

KGO-TV reports (http://bit.ly/17F63g8) the victims, all women in their 30s, were traveling on the San Mateo bridge late Saturday when smoke came from in the back of the limousine. The driver pulled over and the vehicle quickly became engulfed in flames.

California Highway Patrol Officer Amelia Jack tells the station five victims who were trapped in the burning limousine died.

Five others escaped.

Of the survivors, Jack said three suffered smoke inhalation and one had severe burns. They were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Several lanes of the bridge were closed as officers investigated the cause of the deadly fire.
