LOS ANGELES -- Two East Bay music teachers are among 217 educators nationwide named as quarterfinalists by the Recording Academy and Grammy Foundation for the first Music Educator Award.
Gary Coartney, instrumental music director at Concord High and Sylvester Henderson, music instructor at Los Medanos Community College, were selected along with 18 other California educators from more than 30,000 nominations. The award was created to recognize public and private school teachers who have made significant and lasting contributions to music education and are committed to maintaining music instruction in schools, according to a news release.
Semifinalists will be announced in August and one winner will be selected from 10 finalists during Grammy Week 2014. The list of quarterfinalists is at www.grammymusicteacher.com.
