The Grammy Foundation on Wednesday named 25 teachers from across the country as semifinalists for its first-ever Music Educator Award.
The 25 music teachers were selected from 217 quarterfinalists announced in May, who themselves were chosen from more than 30,000 nominations submitted from all 50 states.
East Bay music educators Gary Coartney, who teaches at Concord High, and Silvester Henderson, who teaches at Los Medanos Community College, were named quarterfinalists but did not advance to the top 25 announced Wednesday.
"We received tens of thousands of nominations for the Music Educator Award, and many thousands of complete applications were submitted," said David R. Sears, executive education director for the Grammy Foundation. "We feel it is quite a distinction for a teacher to reach the quarterfinalist stage in the process."
