Darting here and there ...
Û With this Warriors team, it doesn't matter as much if "we believe." Much more important is that "they believe." They just don't require a T-shirt for it to be obvious.
Û The W's have nine road wins this season. Their road-victory total for the last four full seasons, starting with last year and going backward: 11, 10, 8 and 8. So yes, this is very amazing.
Û The Warriors are achieving a lot of firsts dating back decades. Still quite a ways to go yet, but here's another one: They haven't gone to the playoffs with a coach other than Don Nelson since 1986-87 -- 26 years!
Û In case you've lost count, they've had 11 coaches other than Nelson in that span, counting Mark Jackson. Unofficial Sporcle quiz: Can you name them all without peeking in three minutes? We doubt it, even giving you Jackson (answers below).
Û Draymond Green is living proof NBA scouts can't quantify intangibles. The rookie was the 35th pick in the NBA draft, and less than 25 games into his pro career, he's defending LeBron James and making huge plays in crunchtime. Absolute blind steal.
Û Imagining one scout talking to another scout: "Hey, Green spent four years playing in college. There must be something wrong with him."
Û Yes, it was blatant and a bit ugly. But to see David Lee hammer LeBron to the floor as he drove the lane was kind of a beautiful thing. Protecting the paint is precisely the thing the Warriors haven't done for so many losing seasons.
Û Wonder what odds you could have gotten in Vegas on the Warriors being 5½ games ahead of the Lakers on Dec. 14? Too ridiculous to get a line on it, probably.
Û A stat that boggles the mind: The Lakers are 2-11 when Kobe Bryant scores 30 or more points. No wonder Magic Johnson is spending more time hanging out with the Dodgers.
Û Fiscal cliff? The Dodgers and Angels have built one the size of Half Dome down in SoCal.
Û How the Angels are trying to bridge their expenses: They're turning the press box behind home plate into high-end luxury suites, and moving the media down the right field line. A better vantage point to watch Josh Hamilton drop fly balls!
Û In the wake of the Hamilton deal, Bovada online sportsbook has made the Angels the favorite to win the 2013 World Series at 15-2. The Dodgers are second at 8-1. The Giants? Tied for ninth at 14-1. The A's? Tied for 13th at 25-1. Get your bets down.
Û Another one that'll make you want to upchuck: Dodgers and Angels 18-1 to meet in a Freeway Series.
Û Not sure if those Giants odds factor in the return of Andres Torres.
Û Interesting comparison on our Giants blog from a contributor. Shane Victorino will be getting $13 million next year from the Red Sox. Torres will get $2 million from the Giants. Is there really that dramatic a disparity between those two players?
Û Brandon McCarthy, terrific guy and a fairly terrific pitcher when healthy. But the Diamondbacks are risking a lot of cash on a guy who doesn't have a great history of staying healthy.
Û Historical Oddity Dept.: Tom Brady has played only one career game against his favorite boyhood team, the 49ers, and that was during the 2004 season, a 21-7 win in Foxborough against a San Francisco team that went 2-14. Tough to pick a winner, but definitely time for an update.
Û Aldon Smith, closing in on the NFL sack record, doesn't see a future lock Hall of Famer when he looks at Brady. He only sees a stationary target.
Û The ongoing saga of Rolando McClain. Like, yawn, who cares?
Û Roger Goodell, his credibility in ongoing crumble mode, suddenly wants to expand the playoffs and eliminate kickoffs altogether. What next, Rog, a round ball?
Û The 11 Warriors coaches answer: Ed Gregory, Bob Lanier, Rick Adelman, P.J. Carlesimo, Garry St. Jean, Dave Cowens, Brian Winters, Eric Musselman, Mike Montgomery, Keith Smart, Jackson. Quite a list.
Û Finally, Pete Rose has a reality show coming in January on TLC called "Hits and Mrs." that will also feature his fiancee, Playboy model Kiana Kim, plus some of Pete's former wives. Jose Canseco must be so envious.
