ABC changed its plans and will not feature Chris Brown singing next week on "Good Morning America," the New York Post reported Monday. Instead, Brown, convicted in August of beating up his then-girlfriend Rihanna, has agreed to "come clean" in a primetime interview about what happened. Brown, who has a new album coming out, will not get a chance to perform.
ABC originally planned to feature an interview with and performance by Brown on "GMA." The network on Monday gave no reason for the changes, but the network was widely criticized after it canceled a performance by openly gay singer Adam Lambert on "GMA" — which followed the "American Idol" runner-up's raunchy performance on the American Music Awards — then announced plans for Brown to promote his latest CD with a live show on the program.
Brown, who was sentenced to six months community labor and probation for the assault, has publicly apologized for the attack, but has discussed few details of the incident. Now, reportedly, he promises to divulge details of the violent altercation that took place on the eve of the Grammy Awards. His interview will be with "GMA" host Robin Roberts, and is set to air on "20/20" Dec. 11.
His appearance follows by a month Rihanna's interview with Diane Sawyer on "20/20," which drew nearly 9 million viewers, and during which Rihanna said she was "embarrassed" that she had gone back to Brown shortly after the beating and entertained the idea of
ARE THEY OR AREN'T THEY?: Reps for Reese Witherspoon and Jake Gyllenhaal on Monday denied a weekend report that the couple had broken up, but the source of that report — People magazine's Web site — says signs still point to trouble in paradise.
The two have been dating more than a year and have largely been able to keep the relationship quiet. People.com's claim on Sunday that the two had broken up took the gossip world by surprise. The report quoted a friend of Witherspoon's as saying she had been told by the actress on Thanksgiving that the pair had broken up. The Web site said Witherspoon was seen driving alone in Los Angeles on Friday and Saturday, and on Sunday was spotted at the Whiskey Kitchen in Nashville — without Gyllenhaal. People said the couple has not been seen together in more than two weeks.
One rumored rift between the two is that Gyllenhaal wants to get married, but Witherspoon doesn't.
"There's a huge attraction between them, and they've become a team, partners," a friend of Witherspoon's told People.com. "But Jake can be a little overbearing at times, and Reese is really happy with life right now. Why (mess) that up or change a good thing?"
Witherspoon has two children — daughter Ava, 10, and son Deacon, 6 — with former husband Ryan Phillippe, whom she divorced in 2007.
ANOTHER CELEB UNION THAT MIGHT BE ON THE ROPES: Britain's Daily Mail is reporting that Gwyneth Paltrow and Chris Martin are "spending time apart," and that things have been rocky between the couple since Martin, lead singer for the band Coldplay, had a dalliance with a "Hollywood starlet" a few months ago.
Neither Paltrow nor Martin has commented on the report. The pair have been married since 2003 and have two children.
BUT HERE'S ONE RELATIONSHIP THAT WE'RE PRETTY SURE IS GOING WELL: Former first daughter Chelsea Clinton has gotten engaged to her longtime beau Marc Mezvinsky. The pair announced the news over the weekend in an e-mail to friends, a spokesman for Chelsea's dad, Bill Clinton, confirmed. No wedding date has been set.
Mezvinsky is an investment banker and the son of two former members of Congress, former Pennsylvania Rep. Marjorie Margolies-Mezvinsky and ex-Iowa Rep. Edward Mezvinsky, who recently got out of jail for a $10 million investment rip-off.
Chelsea and Mezvinsky have known each other since attending Stanford University together while Clinton's father was president.
HE MUST HAVE STRONG TEETH: "Breakfast Club" star Anthony Michael Hall is not facing charges even though police reports say he "bit his girlfriend's forehead" and "pushed, shoved and spit at" her during a 2 a.m. fight in her New York City apartment on Nov. 10.
After the alleged violent scuffle with then-girlfriend Diana Falzone, police said, Hall returned at 3 a.m. and repeatedly banged on her door before he was escorted out by officers.
Falzone, a Sirius Radio host and columnist, and Hall dated a year before she ended the relationship last month, perhaps because he kept looking at her forehead and muttering "I'd like me a taste of that!" Although that is pure speculation on our part.
Falzone has since obtained a restraining order against Hall, who says he has bipolar disorder and has battled substance abuse problems in the past.
Today is Tuesday, Dec. 1, the 335th day of 2009. There are 30 days left in the year.
