Emergency crews closed a major East Contra Costa thoroughfare Tuesday evening and an air ambulance was called in after an apparent suicide attempt ended unsuccessfully, police said.
According to Oakley police Sgt. Steve Perata, around 7:40 p.m. a man in his 60s rode a bicycle to an orchard about 100 yards off Main Street where he shot himself in the head with a .25 caliber handgun. The shot proved non fatal.
After the shooting, Perata said, the wounded man called his wife and told her to come pick him up. He then got on his bike and pedaled about 200 yards toward Main Street, where he waited for police to show up.
Main Street — a key commute route for thousands of local residents — was closed between Big Break and Bridgehead roads for about 15 minutes while a helicopter landed to transport the wounded man to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek. His condition was unknown late Tuesday.
