MARTINEZ — Police will hold a sobriety checkpoint in Martinez next Tuesday — the county's first such checkpoint to be held on St. Patrick's Day, Contra Costa Sheriff's Office spokesman Jimmy Lee said.
The checkpoint will be held between 6 p.m. Tuesday and 2 a.m. Wednesday on Alhambra Avenue. Martinez police will be assisted by officers from Pleasant Hill, Concord and the sheriff's department.
The operation is part of the "Avoid the 25" program, and its goal is to reduce traffic collisions caused by drunken drivers through enforcement and education. Drivers can expected to be delayed for a few seconds.
The checkpoint will be paid for by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety.
