A Contra Costa County judge has ruled against retired deputy sheriff Donna Irwin who sought to block the public release of her pension payment details.
As a result of the decision, the Contra Costa County Employees Retirement Association will release to the California Foundation for Fiscal Responsibility, a pension reform watchdog group, the names and pension amounts of former county employees who collect $100,000 or more per year.
The Contra Costa Times, the Los Angeles Times and the California Newspaper Publishers Association also joined the lawsuit.
The newspapers sought to preserve gains the industry made in a successful case brought by the Contra Costa Times in 2007 in which the California Supreme Court ordered public agencies to disclose as public information the names and salaries of employees.
Superior Court Judge Barry Baskin agreed with the newspaper's attorney that pension data, such as public employee salaries, is public information.
