HARP MUSIC by Shawn Spiteri and Portia Diwa of the Celtic group Triskela and a trumpet fanfare by Gabriel's Trio will herald the opening of the "Bay Area Annual" juried exhibition and "Angels: Artists Imagine the Invisible" at the Sanchez Art Center. The performers will play during a reception from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the gallery.
The "Bay Area Annual" showcases works by 30 artists juried by JoAnne Northrup, chief curator at the San Jose Museum of Art. Previously, she served as curator of exhibits and collections at the de Saisset Museum in Santa Clara. Northrup will give a talk at 11 a.m. Saturday.
More than 400 works were entered by California artists, with 42 pieces chosen for the show. Five exhibiting artists will be selected to receive a $100 Juror's Award.
The "Bay Area Annual" exhibition will be on view in the Main Gallery and West Gallery through Dec. 5.
Running concurrently in the Sanchez's East Gallery, "Angels: Artists Imagine the Invisible" is presented by Arts of the Covenant, a group of more than 100 Bay Area visual artists founded by Marianne Lettieri. They meet monthly to discuss "the intersection of art and Christian faith."
Lettieri notes that the "art history of almost all cultures reveals a belief in angels." (Contact her at mariannelettieri@yahoo.com.)

Fall color
Vibrant leaves and ripe fruits add to the beauty of the fall season. "Fall Into Color," an exhibit opening Monday at Viewpoints Gallery, pictures autumn scenes such as those from around the Bay Area, captured in oil by landscape painter Carolyn Hofstetter and in watercolors by Kathleen Alexander. A reception for the artists is scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 13.
The show runs through Nov. 29 at the gallery, 315 State St., Los Altos. Hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays-Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays. Viewpoints will extend its Friday hours to 8 p.m. from Nov. 13 through Christmas. Contact 650-941-5789 or www.viewpointsgallery.com.
Von Haunalter featured
An exhibit of new water media paintings by Barbara von Haunalter opens Monday at Portola Art Gallery. A reception will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Nov. 14.
Von Haunalter works in a variety of water media, including transparent watercolor, gouache and water-based oil, and paints on surfaces ranging from multimedia boards to canvas to 140-pound watercolor paper.
For three paintings she worked with "straight watercolor" on Mona Lisa panels — very slick gessoed art boards made for oils and acrylic. She says, "The paint slid around quite a bit, but I was able to pull out paint easily and get some different effects."
She started all of the works on location outdoors. "That is the only way I paint," she says. Some art was finished later with pastel.
"Expressions in Water Media" will continue through Nov. 30 at the gallery at Allied Arts, 75 Arbor Road, Menlo Park. Hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays-Saturdays. Contact 650-321-0220 or www.portolaartgallery.com.

Fabric artist Karin Moggridge will hold a clearance sale of "Art to Wear" during the event. Her work includes scarves, shawls, jackets, skirts and pants.
The show will be on view through Dec. 5. The 1870 Art Center is at 1870 Ralston Ave., Belmont. Gallery hours are 1 to 5 p.m. Thursdays-Sundays or by appointment by calling 650-595-9679. Visit www.1870artcenter.org.
At Skyline
Works by Nick Perret, Robert Poplack and Tim Spaulding are on display in "Landscape Derivations" at the Skyline College Art Gallery. The three artists use a similar process to observe and then distill referents in the landscape to create their imagery.
Perret lives and works for most of the year on the Greek island of Samos.
Poplack, a longtime plein air painter, develops larger abstract works in the studio. He is associate professor of art and director of the Wiegand Gallery at Notre Dame de Namur University.
Spaulding is a studio painter, working on unstretched canvas or paper taped to a wall. Much of his subject matter involves the beach and surf — the meeting of land and sea.
The exhibit runs through Dec. 2. The gallery is in Building One, 3300 College Drive, San Bruno. Admission is free. Gallery hours vary. Visit the gallery Web site at www.smccd.edu/accounts/skygallery. or call 650-738-4294.
