HERCULES — A Cloverdale woman has been identified as the person killed Wednesday evening when she drove the wrong way on Interstate 80 and struck another car head-on, the Contra Costa County Coroner's Office said.

The crash occurred shortly after the CHP began receiving reports of a wrong-way driver on an eastbound portion of the freeway, east of Willow Avenue, at 7:35 p.m. A gray Chevrolet Lumina was seen heading westbound in the eastbound lanes, according to the CHP, and struck a white Volkswagen Jetta, then struck a Toyota Camry and a Buick Century.

The Lumina driver, 47-year-old Penney Rivera, died at the hospital. It was not clear Thursday why she was traveling against traffic.

The other drivers and their passengers suffered only minor injuries, the CHP said.
