There already had been plenty of scoring when the San Leandro High football team and host Bishop O'Dowd went to the fourth quarter Saturday, with the Pirates holding a 28-14 lead and looking to close out another Hayward Area Athletic League win.
The fireworks, though, had only just begun.
The teams combined to put up 59 points in the fourth quarter, with San Leandro pulling out a 58-43 victory. The teams combined to run 42 offensive plays in the quarter, and the longest interval without a score was a 4-minute, 58-second stretch. That streak ended with 2:51 remaining, when O'Dowd's Trenton Trammell scored on a 2-yard run.
Finding the end zone most frequently in the quarter was the Pirates' George Roberson, who scored three touchdowns and also added a 2-point conversion. He scored on runs of 37 and 2 yards before putting the game on ice with the 72-yard TD run.
Matt Balich shouldered much of the load for the Dragons in the final period, completing 12 of 21 passes for 162 yards and two touchdowns. He attempted 40 passes for the game.
