San Jose will host the 2012 U.S. Figure Skating Championships, the second time the city has staged the event.

The nationals will be at HP Pavilion on Jan. 22-29.

The other time nationals were hosted by San Jose was in 1996, when Michelle Kwan won the first of her nine women's championships. San Jose's Rudy Galindo was the men's champion. He's now 40 and coaches locally. Spokane, Wash., is host for January's nationals.

College football

Remorseful Florida linebacker Brandon Spikes asked to serve a full-game suspension for trying to gouge the eyes of Georgia running back Washaun Ealey. Coach Urban Meyer obliged. On Monday, Meyer suspended Spikes for the first half of Saturday's game against Vanderbilt.

  • Bobby Bowden sounds like he plans to coach next year at Florida State and says he'll choose the successor to defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews. Bowden said he'd give his designated successor, offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher, some input in the choice. Andrews said Tuesday that he's retiring after the season.

    Isiah Thomas lost his coaching debut at Florida International when visiting Northwood, an NAIA school coached By Rollie Massimino, beat the Panthers 71-61 in an exhibition game.

    IndyCar Series driver Danica Patrick is nearing completion of a two-year deal with JR Motorsports, the NASCAR Nationwide Series operation owned by Dale Earnhardt Jr. Patrick signed a three-year contract extension with Andretti Green Racing earlier this year, and date conflicts make running a full Nationwide schedule impossible.

  • The NASCAR Sprint Cup series' 22nd visit to Infineon Raceway will highlight the track's 2010 schedule. The Toyota/Save Mart 350 will be June 20, while the Indy Grand Prix of Sonoma will be Aug. 22.

    Chicago Cubs left-hander Ted Lilly had surgery on his left shoulder, and no timetable was set for his return.

  • Ryan Miller made 24 saves, and Thomas Vanek had a goal and assist in Buffalo's 3-0 win over the New York Islanders.

  • Tomas Vokoun made 31 saves for his second straight shutout in Florida's 3-0 win over visiting Carolina.

    Golf

    The Frys.com Open is leaving Scottsdale, Ariz., to a temporary home at CordeValle Resort, putting it closer to the title sponsor's corporate headquarters in San Jose. The event again will be held in October in 2010. Moving the tournament to John Fry's Morgan Hill course is the ultimate goal, but the facility isn't ready to host a PGA Tour event yet.

    Roger Federer reached the quarterfinals of the Swiss Indoors by beating Andreas Seppi 6-3 6-3.
