Las Lomas High School Principal Patrick Lickiss announced in an e-mail to the community Wednesday that he will retire at the end of this school year in June.

After 23 at the top-performing Walnut Creek high school — 17 of those as principal — 59-year-old Lickiss said it was with "mixed feelings" that he decided to retire.

In the letter, he thanked the Acalanes Union High School District which he has worked for 37 years, his entire career in education. He said the strength of Las Lomas comes from the staff, parents, students and community.

"It is rare that a person can go to work each day knowing that they have a wonderful and fulfilling career," he wrote. "I am one of those people who can say that they have the perfect job."

What Lickiss will be doing next is not clear. He told the Times that he has no definitive plans at the moment, but he is investigating a number of options, though "flat-out retiring is not one of them."
