ORINDA — An electrical in a heating and cooling unit was blamed for a fire that broke out at a classroom at Del Rey Elementary School this morning, the Moraga-Orinda Fire District said.
Firefighters were called at 6:43 a.m. to Del Rey Elementary School on El Camino Moraga after smoke was seen coming from a portable building on campus, the fire district said. They arrived within minutes and quickly put it out, limiting damage to the single classroom.
The building was not occupied when the fire was reported. School has been out of session all week for Thanksgiving break.
"The fire appears to be the result of an electrical problem associated with the heating and air conditioning system for the portable," said Battalion Chief Jeff Maxwell.
The fire caused about $18,000 in damage and $2,000 in content loss.
