The Bay Area Air Quality Management District has declared today a Spare the Air Day due to an unhealthy air forecast for the region.
A Spare the Air Day means burning wood, manufactured fire logs and other solid fuel is banned both indoors and outdoors all day. Violators of the rule face fines.
Smoke from wood is the greatest source of air pollution in the winter in the Bay Area, air district officials said. When there is no wind, the pollutants aren't dispersed and instead become trapped close to the ground and grow to unhealthy levels.
