ALAMEDA COUNTY — Workshops will be held in Fremont, Dublin and Oakland on a proposed ballot measure to increase the vehicle registration fee by $10 annually in Alameda County.

The Alameda County Transportation Authority wants to hear from residents about its proposal for the higher fee to fund repair roads, improve public transit and take other measures to curb traffic congestion and pollution.

The meetings are at the following times and places:

-- 6:30 p.m. March 31 at the Fremont Library, 2450 Stevenson Blvd., Fremont.

-- 6:30 p.m. April 8 at the Dublin Library community room, 200 Civic Plaza, Dublin.

-- 6:30 p.m. April 15, City of Oakland hearing room 3, One Ogawa Plaza, Oakland.

A new state law by state Sen. Loni Hancock, D-Berkeley, gives county transportation authorities the power to seek voter approval for a $10 countywide surcharge on vehicle registration fees. Approval by a simple majority of voters is necessary
