LAFAYETTE — A woman escaped a two-alarm fire at her Lafayette home Sunday evening with no injuries.

Contra Costa Fire District Battalion Chief Kevin McCarthy said the fire broke out around 7:40 p.m. in the garage of a home on Sandalwood Court, extensively damaging the garage and a car parked inside it. The fire was stopped before it spread to the main home, but McCarthy estimated 50 to 60 percent of the home's roof was damaged beyond repair. The fire's cause remains undetermined.

The female resident who was home at the time was trapped in a back bedroom by smoke, but escaped out a window. She did not suffer from smoke inhalation or any other injuries, McCarthy said.

Neighbors reportedly came to the woman's aid, calling for her and breaking out windows until she escaped.
