ORINDA — Alert swim club coaches pulled an 8-year-old boy from the bottom of a pool and resuscitated him this morning, according to the Moraga-Orinda Fire District.
The boy was taking swim lessons at Sleepy Hollow Swim and Tennis Club in Orinda around 11:25 a.m. when one of his coaches noticed he was at the bottom of the pool, said Moraga-Orinda Battalion Chief Darrell Lee.
The coach pulled the boy out while another called 911. The boy was not breathing and the two coaches administered CPR. He was awake by the time Orinda police arrived just after 11:30.
The boy coughed up water, nd the swallowed water may have been what caused him to stop breathing, according to Lee.
He was taken by helicopter to Children's Hospital Oakland and was sitting up and talking with rescuers before getting onboard the aircraft, Lee said.
The boy's mother was at the club at the time. Four lifeguards were on duty but did not need to get into the pool because of the coaches' actions, he said.
"Without them this kid may not have survived," he said.
