Laurie Jean Cone, 47, Gary Gallion, 29, and Shawna Bayless, 39, all of San Bernardino, are each charged with one count of first-degree murder, one count of first-degree residential robbery and one count of first degree burglary in connection with the death of Laurie Cone's estranged husband, John "Jack" Cone, 64.
Judge Bridgid McCann moved the case to a different department, and asked how long attorneys anticipated the hearing would last.
Attorneys said the preliminary hearing would take about three hours.
At a preliminary hearing, a judge hears witness testimony and reviews evidence to determine if sufficient probable cause exists to hold over the defendants for trial on the charges.
Attorney Ed Congdon, who is representing Cone, declined comment regarding the charges against her, except to say, "They're serious."
"Everybody's still working on the case and trying to get all the information we can," he said.
Attorneys James Gass, who is representing Gallion, and Art Benner, representing Bayless, also declined comment in the case. Brenner said he hadn't reviewed the case yet and had just met his client right before the hearing.
Gass anticipated that the preliminary hearing would be postponed until Friday.
Relatives of Bayless, including her two daughters, sat in the courtroom during the pre-preliminary hearing. They walked away silently outside the courtroom when asked about the charges against their mother.
Laurie Cone reported her husband's death to police on April 2 when she returned to his home and found his body about 4:20 a.m. Cone and her daughter, Jackie Cone, had spent the evening gambling at San Manuel Indian Bingo & Casino. About 20 guns and John Cone's Ford F-150 pickup were missing.
Police say an investigation showed that Laurie Cone conspired to have her husband killed for personal financial gain.
