Upstart California falls short

  • The 10th-seeded California High baseball team concluded its thrilling postseason run with a 3-2 loss to No. 1 De La Salle in the North Coast Section Division I championship game at O.co Coliseum on June 2. The Division I playoffs showcased the East Bay Athletic League, which produced all four semifinalists. Granada lost 9-3 against De La Salle in the semifinals, and California, which entered the postseason with a .500 record, topped Monte Vista 5-2. The Grizzlies (15-13) scored twice in the second inning against De La Salle to take a 2-1 lead. Tyler Johnson singled home Kevin Farley and Blake Guardino tripled in Johnson. But the speedy Spartans rallied for the victory. Starter Cody Ball and reliever Adam Kimmel pitched well for California.

    Amador Valley takes second

  • The powerful Amador Valley softball team lost a tense battle with James Logan 1-0 in the North Coast Section Division I championship game at Saint Mary's College on June 1. Johanna Grauer struck out 17 and tossed a three-hitter for the Dons (26-1), who had a 38-game winning streak dating back to last season ended. After Logan went ahead 1-0 in the top of the seventh inning, the Dons nearly tied it. Ashley Lotoszynski and Grauer singled to put runners on first and second with no outs. Two outs later, Zoe Price lined a base hit up the middle, but a sliding Lotoszynski was tagged out at home plate to end the game.

    Wildcats savor dream season

  • The best season in Dougherty Valley's brief baseball history ended with a 6-3 loss to top seed Campolindo in the North Coast Section Division II championship game at O.co Coliseum on June 2. The Wildcats, seeded second, didn't go down easily. They rallied to trail 5-3 on Tanner Pinkston's two-run double in the bottom of the fifth.

    Valley Christian drops final

  • Julian Kelly struck out 12 and tossed a two-hitter, but the Valley Christian baseball team absorbed a 3-2 loss to Bay Counties League-East-rival Head-Royce in the North Coast Section Division V championship game June 2 at Saint Mary's College. The Vikings ended Head-Royce pitcher Steven Farinaro's no-hit bid on a Jared Vick double with two outs in the bottom of the sixth. Josh Stevens followed with an RBI single to cut the deficit to 3-1. In the seventh, Kelly tripled and scored on Jared Dalrymple's deep sacrifice fly to make the score 3-2. Will Cantrell added a two-out double, but Valley couldn't get him home to tie the game.

  • Noel Frazier, Calfornia track and field -- Frazier capped his brilliant high school career by clearing 6 feet, 101/4 inches to win the state title in the high jump in Clovis on June 2 .

  • Adam Kimmel, California baseball -- Kimmel pitched three scoreless innings of relief, not allowing a hit, in the Grizzlies' 3-2 loss to De La Salle on June 2 in the NCS Division I championship game.

  • Tanner Pinkston, Dougherty Valley baseball -- Pinkston hit a two-run double in the fifth inning in the Wildcats' 6-3 loss to Campolindo on June 2 in the NCS Division II championship game.

  • Johanna Grauer, Amador Valley softball -- Grauer struck out 17 and allowed three hits in the Dons' 1-0 loss to James Logan on June 1 in the NCS Division I championship.

  • Julian Kelly, Valley Christian baseball -- Kelly struck out 12 and fired a two-hitter in the Vikings' 3-2 loss to Head-Royce in the NCS Division V championship game June 2 .
