Refurbished tower unveiled
The top tower of the historic Dutra Tower is placed on top of its water tower base on June 1 at the Discover the Delta Education Foundation Center east of Rio Vista. The historic tower was moved from its former location at the Dutra Dredging Co. in Rio Vista to the new location where a future Discover the Delta Education Center visitors center will be built. The 80,000-pound tower, which is more than a century old, was moved from the one side of the Delta to the other with two cranes and some tug boats because its massive size wouldn't allow it to fit on the Rio Vista Bridge. Getting the top tower placed took more than an hour of work. The Education Center is slated to open in 2013 and will feature information about the Delta's history, waterways and agriculture.
