A San Ramon man was arrested Sunday evening after he drove his sport utility vehicle into a 72-year-old woman and drove off, leaving her with fatal injuries, police said.

The collision happened just after 7 p.m. at the intersection of Bollinger Canyon Road and Canyon Lakes Drive in San Ramon, according to police. Witnesses told officers they saw a red Ford Explorer strike the woman in the street before speeding away.

The woman, a San Ramon resident, was taken by helicopter to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek, where she died about three hours later, police said.

There had been numerous witnesses, and police determined the owner of the vehicle was San Ramon resident Justin Stubblefield, who was on probation and had an open arrest warrant for burglary. He was arrested on charges of driving with a suspended license, vehicular manslaughter and hit-and-run.

The case remains under investigation. Anyone with any information is asked to call the San Ramon Police Department at 925-973-2700.
