Montclair officials will hold a preliminary budget workshop at 6 p.m. tonight at City Hall, 5111 Benito St.

With the dissolution of its redevelopment agency, the city has had to lay off 11 full-time employees - the city's most severe staffing reduction in decades.

Officials say the city could no longer afford those positions.

Retaining them would have resulted in a $1.3 million burden to the city's general fund.
