Lawyers announced Friday that they are ready to start jury selection in the case of a U.S. Marine accused of killing an 18-month-old baby in November 2010 in Twentynine Palms.

Pre-trial motions for the case are expected to be heard on Monday, according to court records, and a jury panel was scheduled to report to the Joshua Tree Superior Courthouse on Tuesday.

Joshua Kruzik, 23, is charged with murder and murder and willful injury to a child causing death.

Kruzik has been discharged from Marine duty and transferred to a civilian jail to face charges, authorities said.

In 2012, Kruzik was staying with the baby's parents, Timothy and Melissa Allen, who were both Marines stationed in Twentynine Palms, authorities said. Kruzik was in Twentynine Palms for training.

On Nov. 20, 2010, sheriff's deputies responded to the 6200 block of Daisy Avenue in Twentynine Palms after Timothy Allen came home and found his baby in her crib not breathing, authorities said.

The San Bernardino County sheriff-coroner later determined the baby died because of blunt force trauma, authorities said.
