Public safety, city spending and blight were among top issues five Brentwood City Council candidates covered during the recent Election Previews 2012 debate.
Incumbents Bob Brockman and Erick Stonebarger are running for additional terms alongside newcomers Gene Clare, Carissa Pillow and former councilman Chris Becnel. The debate was moderated by Times' political reporter Lisa Vorderbrueggen and will start airing on Oct. 4 via Channel 24.
Stonebarger said that his priorities of fiscal sustainability, infrastructure and public safety have not changed during his six years in office.
"We need to get to a balanced budget so our revenues exceed all of our expenditures," he said. "Without that fiscal sustainability, we can't prioritize public safety."
Brockman is seeking election to a third term and said that his leadership helped to set quality development standards and manage the city's growth. The former Planning Commissioner said that he has done a tremendous job on the council and helped to resolve many past issues.
Calling himself a trusted civic and educational leader, Clare said that he would like to help plan good development and prioritize the needs of the North Brentwood corridor as a councilman.
"For me, my inspiration comes from service to others," Clare said.
Becnel said that much was accomplished during his tenure on the council, including the planning of the Brentwood Civic Center and downtown improvements.
"While other cities are now rehiring police officers, we never laid them off," he said. "This is our town and our future, and we need to work together to move forward."
As a mother and commuter, Pillow said that she understands the concerns of the majority of residents. She is passionate about attracting high-paying jobs, supporting police officers and working to make Brentwood the greenest and most sustainable community in the nation.
"I want to establish a community vision that joins together all sectors of our community," she said.
