SAN BERNARDINO - A 38-year-old Cal State San Bernardino graduate student was fatally shot by campus police early Saturday night at an off-campus dorm.

Campus officers were responding to a call regarding a disturbance in a common area at the University Village dorm complex, 1577 W Northpark Blvd., said Sid Robinson, a CSUSB spokesman.

Bartholomew Williams, who was studying educational instructional technology, was pronounced dead at the scene at about 6:30 p.m., police and university sources say.

The incident is being investigated by the city of San Bernardino police, as is the protocol for this type of situation, Robinson said. "Officers made contact with Williams in the hallway of his dorm," said a San Bernardino police description of the incident. "During the contact, Williams became aggressive and an altercation occurred. Officers fearing for their safety, fired their weapon striking Williams," the statement said.

One officer received medical treatment at an area hospital for a non-life threatening injury, police said.

Earlier in the day the campus had hosted winter graduation ceremonies for some 900 students. That event was unrelated to the situation with Williams, Robinson said. "The day started out in celebration but ended in tragedy," Robinson said.

University Village is the university's newest dorm complex and it features apartment-style living, Robinson said. Generally, it is reserved for upper-level students, he said.
