MILLBRAE -- A 16-year-old South San Francisco girl was in stable condition after being shot and wounded Saturday night across the street from Capuchino High School, police said.

Police didn't say what provoked the violence near Santa Theresa Way and Park Boulevard around 10:25 p.m. The girl, whose named was not released, was rushed to a hospital where she was in stable condition at last word, said San Mateo County Sheriff's Office Deputy Rebecca Rosenblatt.

The shooting represents a rare instance of gun violence in the generally peaceful bedroom community of about 21,700.

No arrests have been made. Authorities didn't release any information on suspects. No further information was immediately available.
