NEWPORT BEACH - A doctor was shot to death Monday inside a medical office building near Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach, and a suspect was quickly arrested.

The shooting was reported at 2:45 p.m. on the second floor of a medical building at 520 Superior Ave., said Kathy Lowe of the Newport Beach Police Department.

When officers arrived they found the victim and the suspect, who was taken into custody without incident, Lowe said.

The victim was Ronald Franklin Gilbert, a urologist at Orange Coast Urology, a colleague of Gilbert's told The Orange County Register.

Gilbert was shot by a man witnesses described as being in his 50 s or 60 s, according to KCAL9.

Police were trying to determine a motive for the shooting, Lowe said.

An employee from the office told KCAL (Channel 9) the gunman was a longtime patient of the doctor.

Gilbert was a husband and father of two, a man active in his synagogue, who was two days away from his 53 rd birthday, KCAL9 reported.

He was shot multiple times in the upper body and was pronounced dead at the scene, Lowe said.

No one else was injured in the shooting and it appears the suspect was gunning for the victim, Lowe said.

"We believe this was a very isolated incident," Lowe said.
