2012 Road Trip Scavenger Hunt

Are you hitting the road this summer? How would you like to wrestle the digital devices away from the kids in the back seat and encourage some old-fashioned family fun?

Join our 2013 Road Trip Scavenger Hunt!

Hundreds of Bay Area News Group readers participated last year in this good-natured competition -- and by the time the submissions were judged, then compiled into photo slideshows, we all got a chance to vicariously enjoy the travels of our neighbors.

Here's how it works: We give you a list of 20 items to find during your summer travels. Just snap a photo of each item -- with at least one member of your scavenger hunt team appearing in each picture. You are strongly encouraged to be creative and find some humor on your travels. Then submit your photos by 5 p.m. Sept. 5, and a panel of staff judges will select the winners.

You don't have to have a clutch of kids to take part. All travelers are encouraged to enter -- from solo road warriors and colleagues on business trips to groups of friends and extended families.

Read on to learn the contest rules, and find out more about the categories we will be judging. We will select one winner in each category, except Wild Cards, which may have several winners. And clip the scavenger hunt checklist on this page and take it with you on your travels.

Remember, it's a travel contest, so you must venture outside the nine counties we list below.

Winners get to revel in the publication of their photos and online slideshows that can be shared with friends far and wide.

THE CATEGORIES

Most Items Found

We know from experience that our traveling teams will be up to the challenge, so expect this category to be competitive. For that reason, we are asking every team to answer our tiebreaking question: How many teams will find all 20 items? (Last year, 132 of the 154 teams that participated found all 20 items.) Additional ties will be settled by random draw.

Most Creative Scavengers

Ingenuity wins the day here. The more outside the box you think, the more likely you are to impress the judges. (No, staging photo shoots in the backyard won't count.)

All in the Family

This recognition goes to the family that works well together. Yes, kids, that means you must include your parents in some of the pictures. And we want to see the kids going all out to win this one.

Best Road Trippers

Are you a dynamic duo? Best friends since college? Families teaming up? We are looking here for an enterprising team that is tenacious, creative and clearly enjoying the game.

Made the Judges Laugh

We like to laugh. Winners in this category will have found a lot of items, shown their sense of humor and let us share in the laughter.

Wild Cards

These teams may barely miss the cut in the other categories, but they still deserve recognition for their efforts.

THE RULES

1. Hunt down the items from the checklist. Take a photo of the item. At least one member of your travel group must be in the photo. Be creative!

2. The deadline is 5 p.m. Sept. 5. See the submission instructions in the related box.

3. Captions must include the names of the people appearing in each photo and the city, state and/or country where you found each item. Photos without accurate and full caption details will be disqualified.

4. To be official, an entry must include the full names of all participants, your daytime phone number, email address and mailing address.

5. The judges are ruthless about rules 1 through 4! We don't want any disappointed participants, so make sure to include all the necessary info.

KEEP IN MIND

  • You must leave the region. This is a travel contest, so photos must be shot outside of the following counties: Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, San Benito, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, San Francisco, San Mateo and Solano.

  • Keep it real. Talented photographers on our staff know a doctored photo when they see one. If we think it's a fake, we will disqualify it.

  • Don't forget that at least one member of your team must be in all photographs.

We will feature our winners and at least one of their photos in the Travel section in late September. The complete photo albums of the winners will be posted online.
