PITTSBURG -- A former special education teacher accused of physically abusing young autistic students at Mno Elementary School in Antioch pleaded not guilty to child abuse charges on Monday.

Prosecutors say Brentwood resident Theresa Allen-Caulboy abused six students who were in her special day class between October 2012 and January. The children are 5, 6 and 7 years old, including some who are nonverbal.

Allen-Caulboy resigned from her teaching post in February, a month after parents reported her to police and the Antioch Unified School District placed her on administrative leave. There is an ongoing investigation into reports that school district employees witnessed some of the abuse and failed to contact police as mandated by law.

Parents of some of the victims in April sued the district and five current and former district employees, including Allen-Caulboy, in federal court.

She remains on electronic home arrest and is order to return to Pittsburg court on Aug. 20 to post a $200,000 property bond.
